Big progress made!

Hello everyone!
Sorry for the lack of posts, I've been caught up with school lately and that's eaten up a lot of my time. Luckily, I had all day today to work on level 2. I was so excited to share the progress that I completely forgot I never showed any footage of level 1! I'll be embedding some footage of level 1 + 2 alongside a preview of a very unfinished title screen (the save file update will come eventually!)

So far the game isn't that ambitious, but that's fine by me. I'm proud I managed to get past the first level at all! It was back in June when I really started to work on the game, and even then it was difficult for me to push myself to continue making progress. I was admittedly fairly lazy over the summer, which meant development was slow. It didn't help I wasn't all that familiar with programming.

A lot of game developers brush aside basic stuff like UI and timers and player physics since they already have a lot of experience working with games, but for someone like me who's just getting started with those concepts I previously overlooked as a player, it was daunting! I'm still not happy with how the UI in the levels turned out because of the flickering that occurs (seen in game footage), but I can't find a solution to it at the moment, and I'd rather keep pushing on. After months full of long periods where no progress was made at all though, I finally finish level 1. This was monumental for me because I actually made substantial progress from paper sketches to a full level! Granted, it's not great by any means, but it's something.

That brings up to this week where I recently made huge progress in one day today creating level 2! At this point I've already made the basic scripts and assets needed as my building blocks for more levels, so I anticipate I'll finish level 2 in about two days from now! Making the level with my tilesets and adding in sprite assets felt like making my own Mario Maker level, and it was really fun!

Even though most of the time I get to work on Can Jump comes primarily from weekends, I'm more motivated than ever to complete this project! I plan to make another grassy level then a boss fight for that grass/platform world. I think publishing the demo after making the boss fight will be a good point to get some feedback. Anyways, I'm off to go to sleep to feel energized to finish up level 2 for tomorrow!

Good night everyone!
